Buying your first sports bra and not sure about sizing? Here is how to choose the right sports bra size for the first time — a simple beginner guide with no confusing terminology.
Step 1: Measure Your Bust
Wear a thin unpadded bra or go braless. Wrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust — keep it parallel to the floor. Do not pull too tight. Note the number in inches. This is your bust measurement.
Step 2: Measure Your Underbust
Wrap the tape around your ribcage just under your bust. Keep it snug but not tight. Note the number in inches. This is your band size.
Step 3: Match to a Size Chart
Most sports bras use simple S-M-L-XL sizing. Small = 30-32 inch bust, Medium = 33-35 inch, Large = 36-38 inch, XL = 39-41 inch. If your measurement falls exactly between two sizes, size down — sports bras need a snugger fit than regular bras.
Step 4: Test the Fit
The underband should be horizontal and firm around your ribcage — not riding up. You should be able to slide two fingers under the band. Jump in place 10 times — your breasts should move with your body, not independently. The straps should stay on your shoulders without digging.
